The Grammys are one of the most notorious for being over-the-top and more about the artists simply creating buzz for themselves than about style statements. I even read once that stylists actually dress budding starlets badly on purpose to get them on worst dressed lists just to get their name in print out there somewhere until they get their big break. Like they say, bad press is better than no press.
Personally if a look, be it a red carpet gown or a Vogue spread, can't transfer to the every day, look approachable and be affordable aka readily mimicked I tend to lose interest pretty quickly. Don't get me wrong, I like the drama of impact and I can appreciate the art aspect. But the practicality in me thinks it's just not realistic and if it's out of reach for the general population and for everyday then I think it's a bit wasteful of resourses.
That said, here are some more approachable and wedding appropriate fashions from the Grammys 2010:
First up is Keri Hilson in a belted tulle mermaid gown (designer not named).
First up is Keri Hilson in a belted tulle mermaid gown (designer not named).
This slim cut "true" mermaid style is great for a petite or tall girl so long as they have medium proportions (think sizes 6-10 ish) since the jeweled belt accents their hour glass curves and she is a great example. Unfortunately mermaid styles like these are not for the very slim since the dress holds on to all curves. Because of that this style of dress absolutely requires alterations; since the long bodice is fitted to the knees it looks best when it fits your measurements exactly.
Next up we have Lea Michele in a sheer navy one shouldered Romona Keveza mini with a shredded skirt.
This would look great in white as an alternate reception or "getaway" dress but it's also a cute stylish overall look for a bridesmaid that still manages to come across as simple despite the sheer shoulder. Thanks to the muted colored matte fabric, clean lined bodice and sparse styling the fun skirt really pops. Plus it would look great dancing! Unfortunately this is not a universal style and because of the volume and length of the skirt it would look best on slim hipped bridesmaids.
Last and I think my favorite of the night is singer Pink in a scalloped and jeweled Tony Ward Haute Couture ombre gown.
Maybe I'm just a sucker for ombre but I think this is a great way to inject color (or theme) into your wedding. (It recalls Gwen Stefani's famous pink tinted gown.) Great for the girl who isn't into the all-white look too.
Pink is a great example of the best body type for mermaid gowns whether tall or short: medium proportioned. Generously proportioned gals will look too dangerous and ample while slim proportioned girls lack the curves that this style requires to hold itself to your body (more on flattering looks for both later). But you will note that this style is slightly more forgiving than the above Keri Hilson gown because of the gentler flare of the skirt and the bias cut.
And please remember: all mermaid gowns look best altered to your specific measurements.
