My favorite of the night was Sandra Bullock, not because she won (I was torn between rooting for her and Gabourey) but because her Marchesa gown was amazing! It reminded me slightly of Halle Berry's gown when she won. The soft metallic color, sheer bodice and straps and the asymmetrical sleeve were just great. But I also love that the gown is modest and also that it made her look just a tad hippy but still great! She's no waif and she manages to look like a normal woman as opposed to other 40-something stick thin actresses. Still, it was her night. A sheath style isn't very "bridal" and is more of a standing up style instead of a dancing the night away gown so it's more for a brunch type wedding were you walk around and talk to your guests and take a nibble here and there.
My next favorite look was Anna Kendrick in a barely blush colored off-shoulder Elie Saab. The only thing is I can't figure out if I like it more as a romantic bridesmaid look or a casual beach bride look. Either way it's a really great soft flowy look, perfect for the romantic ambiance of a wedding.
Next up is Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta and Miley Cyrus in Jenny Packham. I put them together because they styles are similar in that they are heavily beaded and metallic A-line ball gowns. Both these girls also have linear body types and their A-line ball gowns are perfect for their body types since the style is flowy and adds shape but doesn't overwhelm their frame and make them look too skinny. I favor Cameron Diaz's styling and posture though and I like her pale skin with the soft color of her gown. I like the Miley Cyrus dress too but not her styling, her posture or how her tan blends in too much with the champagne color of the dress. Either way I think both are very cute bridal looks for the girl who wants to sparkle and shine.Another star who had a similar gown was Amanda Seyfried in a sparkly Armani Prive style. I was so taken with how her dress flowed when she presented and I could just imagine her dancing all night. The pale color of the gown and her pale face washes her out a bit though. Cameron's dress is about the same color but compare how Cameron's strong lip and flowy hair give her presence. So if you take this look keep in mind that stronger color will hold up better and give the look some contrast.
Another lady who looked absolutely stunning during the telecast was Queen Latifah in a gorgeous asymmetrically draped lavender gown. Her stylists really know how to wow. She is a great example of someone who dresses well for her weight and her body is the perfect example of the body type on the well endowed side of the spectrum that fits really well in true mermaid styles. Her entire look is pretty much flawless and so great for a bride or even a guest of the wedding, except looking that good might overshadow the bride!
One of the things that struck me was how well the "plus sized" actresses were styled and it makes me proud of them all for looking so knock out fabulous. It wasn't about them sucking here and tucking there and looking like something they're not, it was about enhancing and embracing what they are.
Gabourey Sidibe in Marchesa and Mo'Nique in Tadashi Shoji wore similar draped blue gowns. Gabourey in a more youthful off shoulder style and gathered at the natural waist (like Anna Kendrick) with appliques and Mo'Nique in an asymmetrical neckline and dropped waist with that cute flower in her hair. While Latifah's curves are naturally more defined and she got away with a more linear look you can see how the draping and rouching is so flattering and gives that little help in defining their bodies. Both are so great for either a maid or bridal style, I almost can't choose but I think that flower is definitely bridal for the girl who eschews the veil.
Another curvy lady I always love is Mariska Hargitay in a navy Vera Wang. Picture this look in white and you've got your look! Again, like Latifah, she has the ideal body type in the medium proportion spectrum to rock a mermaid style.
Lastly I really liked Helen Mirren's Badgley Mischka gown as a mother-of-the-bride look. Even though I hate to say that strictly because of her age, her look really does epitomize the elegance and maturity that we like to imagine in mothers-of-the-bride. I mean who wouldn't want her mom to look that gorgeous? It is elegant and sheer and stylish without looking too young and trendy or worse, competing with the bride.
Just for fun here are a few more looks I couldn't decide if I liked...
Charlize Theron in a lovely lilac colored "boob" attention getting Christian Dior. Looove the color.
Diane Kreuger in a black and ivory textured Chanel. Can't decide if I love it because I can't decide what I think of the middle part. And Zoe Saldana (sorry I can't get my computer to do the ~ above the n!) in a gradated violet Givenchy number that's part can-can girl, part elegant cocktail sheath.
