Pregnant body types can be a bit hard to dress for formal occasions but Tinsel Town can (though not always) be a great source of inspiration for dressing pregnant maids. In my personal opinion a winning look includes a classic style (not trendy or dated) and the pregnant mother must look comfortable, not awkward and should look comfortably "held in" by the gown, meaning the growing milk bust must look supported; a gown should soften, even minimize, the bulk of the temporary body type and the overall style must not look too severe.
The Inspiration: Natalie Portman's 2011 Academy Awards dress from Rodarte.
Natalie's dress features a high and undefined waist with plenty of room for baby. The rouching at the sides and the gathered drape are flattering, although Natalie is already very petite, and the off shoulder style helps soften yet support the neckline (support which - let's face it - many expectant mothers need!) The color also brings out the natural skin tone.
The Look-a-like for Less: Natalie's gown was a custom made Rodarte creation. However you can mimic the look with this BariJay Bridesmaid gown, style 425. It features the basic hallmarks of Natalie's original: off-shoulder neckline, gathered sides, draped front panel for belly. Add your own tassle earring and you're set!
