Because I'm late in the game, I'm just now getting around to the Cannes Film Festival 2012 red carpet fashion. This is also due to the fact that I can't seem to find any adequate coverage -- and by "coverage" I mean great pictures of all the pretty dresses, from different angles, with a note as to who is wearing what. The best I've been able to find has been on Go Fug Yourself, which has a surprisingly good amount of pictures.
Here is Diane Kruger making a grand entrance in a true ball gown (if I find the designer info later I'll be sure to post it). Ladies take note: this is what a ball gown silhouette is supposed to look like, lots of volume! From all angles!
I mean this mostly for people who don't know what they are looking for in wedding gowns. It would be very confusing and frustrating to walk into a bridal boutique and say you want to see the ball gowns and then not like any of them because what you actually want is a fuller style skirt.
Ball gowns are typically big and voluminous, although on rare occasion are they as big as Diane's. The bodice is usually small and tight and the point of the big skirt is actually to put the focus on the waist, which in relation to the full skirt looks svelte and small.
Remember with ball gowns you either go big or go home. (If you don't like the big, voluminous look, perhaps you are not looking for a ball gown and you would prefer a fuller A-line style.)
In the shot below it even looks like she has a whole hoop skirt underneath the gown!
