The Grecian is a style of dress that is primarily characterized by lots of draping. As far as fashion terms, "Grecian" can be a bit of a misnomer however since the style can at times be more accurately described as having a toga influence. The toga was basically a robe style draped garment and versions of it were prevalent for centuries all along the Mediterranean, including Italy, Turkey, and the Mid East as well.
The term "Grecian" however seems to be the one that has stuck most in the fashion industry. The Grecian style gowns all feature some sort of obvious draping in varying degrees. They can also include ruching, gathers, or even pleats, can feature a wrap-style design. Most include some sort of asymmetric element as far as the neckline or in the pattern of the drape.
Modern Grecian styles can either be luxuriously loose or more tailored and close fitting. While the focal point is the usually the draping but modern versions also include varying but minimal degrees of jeweled embellishment.

This Amanda Wakeley gown is among the more dramatic and "truer" Grecians. It is a long column gown that is asymmetrically gathered to one shoulder. It is very loose and has little structure and no waist. The styling here in particular with the bold gold cuffs helps bring to mind imagery of a Greek goddess.

This Enzoani gown has a rare simple embellishment serving as a stomacher* on the otherwise simple draped bodice design. While the bodice is very cinched, the no waist design allows the skirt to be a bit more forgiving.
* A stomacher is an embellished or jeweled panel or piece of jewelry that sits along the center of the torso along the stomach.

Some Grecians like this Ann Taylor gown can incorporate the draped element but also more structured and modern elements like the simple A-line skirt. (Another example of this is the We Love Yu gown above also.) Its a good compromise because its loose and relaxed but it also has some tailoring.
