The bateau is a neckline that runs straight along the shoulder line, skimming the collar bone and usually reaching from shoulder point to shoulder point. The width can vary but usually it is long and wide with tapered ends, almost slit-like.
If you think the word "bateau" kind of sounds like boat then you are very much on the right track since it does actually mean boat in French. And rightfully so, the influence of this neckline is nautical in origin, taking its style cues from classic striped French sailor shirts. The shape of some bateau necklines can be boat shaped, being high but wide both from the front and back, however some designs can have a lower swooped back to compensate for the high front.
However this style is very much feminine as well since it calls attention to lovely shoulder lines, neck, and face. Since it visually widens out upper proportions, it is ideal for pear shapes or anyone with a smaller, narrower torso and bust. But fuller top figures or those with wider, athletic shoulder should be wary since this neckline can make you look too wide, bulky, and top heavy.
Bateau necklines are also referred to as "boat necks" or "Sabrina" necklines.

This Angel Rivera features an embellished bateau neckline with a princess seamed bodice. The heavy embellishment holds up very well to the heavy satin of the otherwise embellishment-free gown.

This Pronovias gown features an illusion bateau neckline with lace applique. In this example the sleeves are formed from the same piece as the neckline so while the fit may be a bit tighter, the look is cleanly seamless.

This Birnbaum & Bullock gown has an illusion bateau neckline. Of particular note is how the neckline spans from shoulder tip to shoulder tip and swoops down to graze the collarbone. Very lovely.
I also love the ribbon bands at the waist.

Finally this last one, another Birnbaum & Bullock stunner, features a bit of a twist on the classic bateau by adding scalloped interest to the edge, which is echoed in the sleeves and at the waist.
